Jagoda Gems is a privately owned company, established in 1991 through the foreign investment program. Its goal is to render skills in the fields of cutting and polishing of gemstones, jewellery manufacturing and the grading and preparation of rough (mined) material for the international market. Jagoda is one of the largest producers of Tourmaline in Africa.
Producing predominately pink and bi-coloured / watermelon for the international market we also have some fine terminated specimen crystals weighing anything up to 60kg.
Jagoda is one of the longest established gemstone mining companies in Zambia and we constantly assist smaller companies to find overseas markets for their ‘semi-precious’ production.
Through Jagoda you are sourcing directly from the mines.
The in-house jewellery department specialises in its own styles and designs – many of which are completely worked and set by hand.
Commissioned pieces are taken in 18kt gold and silver using Zambian metals.
The insurance for export of finished jewellery is still both cumbersome and expensive and severely limits the viability for international orders.
The owners first came to Zambia in 1984 and for 6 years worked with other companies developing their mines in the east and south of the country. While production methods in those days were labour intensive, Zambia became recognised as a new source of fine rough gemstones, most notably for aquamarine, emerald and amethyst.
The marketing of these stones was however, very difficult given the lack of exposure to those other than the few buyers in the trade who ventured to these parts of Africa.
Intent on resolving this hurdle, Jagoda has established a wide international market base, not only for its own production but also to assist other mining companies in Zambia find the much needed turn-over to develop their mines and further their marketing skills.
For many years now Zambia has been an important source of gemstones to the worlds jewellery market. Perhaps best known for its fine emerald and amethyst, Zambia also produces an extraordinary variety of gems such as garnet, tourmaline, citrine, malachite, agate, aquamarine, heliodor and many other beryls.
These minerals are mostly exported in the rough form since there are very few cutting (lapidary) operations in the country.
Gemstone export procedures have been streamlined in recent years to allow foreign buyers easy access to the market. The Ministry of Mines in Lusaka will assist with whatever paperwork may be needed for the trouble free export of gems.
Locally crafted gemstones and jewellery is developing and some fine examples of this art can be found in the capital. Jagoda gems cuts and manufactures its own jewellery in gold and silver. The owners are registered valuation officers with the Ministry and their retail outlet offers an exquisite range of mineral specimens and cut gems from all over Zambia.
