On 17 July 2015, a team of experts went to the dam project construction site in Lom Pangar, Eastern-Cameroon. The purpose of this visit was to evaluate how much progress has been done on the project and if the results were satisfactory.
The group sent by Lenders, once more expressed its satisfaction with the advancement in work, much more since it has now been estimated to have reached an encouraging 82% figure. The figure was however encouraging, especially in relation to the respect of deadlines for the partial set-up, expected in September this year.
The initial set-up will allow for 3 million m3 of water to be retained over the 6 million which is expected when work ends. It will also induce upstream flow regulation of the Sanaga River, hence increasing production capacity of Edéa’s and Sougoulou’s hydropower plants that supply the Southern part of Cameroon.
According to Electricity Development Corporation (EDC) the project’s institutional head, Cameroon’s public electricity concessionaire ENEO Cameroon, with the initial set-up should save around FCfa24 billion. The amount represents the usual investment in fuel used to operate thermal power plants that generates the energy added to Edéa’s and Sougoulou’s production.
