BHN was founded in Nigeria as Blackwood Hodge, a subsidiary of John Blackwood Hodge UK, in 1948. It was originally set up for sales & service of earthmoving, mining & road works equipment. In 1973 it was listed on Lagos Stock Exchange and the reigns of leadership passed on totally to Tolaram Group in 1991. In 2001, the business model and the operations were re-engineered to its present vision: “To be the market leader in Haulage Logistics in Nigeria which will eventually pave the way to become a complete Logistics Solution provider”
BHN has over time carved its niche and has become a premium haulage service provider in Nigeria. During the initial phases of re-engineering, the operations were focused on provision of haulage support to our Group companies, with a view to aiding their growth. However, with focus on expanding the operations to include logistics support for companies outside the Group, the company started growing rapidly. Today, approximately 65% of its revenue comes from external customers.
Fleet Strength
The business currently boasts a fleet size of 525 trucks with a mix of both 30’T (380 HP) and 45’T (465 HP). In fact, BHN is a pioneer in the latter category of trucks. With a well-equipped in-house workshop and a comprehensive Purchase Planning and Inventory Control department, the company now has an aspiration to reach a fleet size of 750 trucks by 2016.
Client Base
BHN currently has an impressive clientele base and serves a number of blue chip companies like Indomie, Nigerian Bottling Company (Coca-Cola), Chivita, Reckitt Benckiser, Far East Mercantile Group, Stallion and Setraco to name a few. These companies are proven stalwarts in their own fields of operations like beverages, consumer goods, construction, agricultural goods etc.
The company provides employment to over 1,000 people – 450 of them being directly appointed by BHN while the remaining, in the form of drivers and motor boys, work under the guidance of contractors. The company enjoys full support and dedication of its payroll staff along with contract and casual staff. This is an example of how people make the difference in an organisation’s success.
The main operations of the company are currently carried out from out of Lagos, which also serves as BHN’s Head Office. The company has a branch in Port Harcourt with a new branch opened in the northern part of Nigeria in Kaduna thereby completing the triangle of locations to enable countrywide coverage.
The Company has a vision to be the road modal logistics provider of choice to major national and multi-national companies in Nigeria.
