According to Jacques Fame Ndongo, Cameroon’s minister of higher education: « This is the start of a great odyssey”.
Last weekend, 80,000 laptops were delivered at Yaoundé airport. This delivery constitutes the first part of an order of 500,000 laptops destined to be shared for free, in the coming weeks, to young Cameroonian students.
The promise was made last year by Paul Biya who wants, by doing this, to boost the development of digital economy and diffusion of knowledge in Cameroon.
Manufactured in China, these laptops are branded PB HEV, short for “Paul Biya Higher Education Vision”. The first students to receive them will be the students of Yaoundé 1 and 2, early January. The second delivery, early February, will be for Douala, Bamenda, and Buea. Private universities will come next.
The budget for the distribution is estimated at CFA75 billion.
