An 18-year-old man has been charged with carrying out the Parsons Green bomb attack, police have said.
Ahmed Hassan has been accused of the attack, which took place one week ago in west London. He was arrested at the port of Dover by police the following day.
Hassan, who comes from Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey, has been charged with attempted murder and with using illegal explosives, London’s Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
He appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court the same day, but reporters present said he did not enter a plea.
The police statement detailed two charges against Hassan:
- Attempting to murder persons travelling on a District Line Train from Wimbledon, contrary to section 1(1) Criminal Attempts Act 1981.
- Causing an explosion with triacetone triperoxide (TATP) or another other explosive substance likely to endanger life and cause serious injury to property, contrary to section 2 Explosive Substances Act 1883.
Danny Shaw, a BBC correspondent who was at the court appearance, said that Hassan was kept behind glass security panels and was flanked by four guards.
He said Hassan has shoulder-length black hair and was wearing a grey sweater and white trousers. He spoke to confirm his identity, but appears not to have said anything else.
Three other men are currently in police custody as part of the police investigation, but have yet to be charged.
Two men, 21-year-old Yahyah Farroukh and an unnamed 48-year-old, were arrested but have since been released without charge.
