Marc Sarosi created AfricaGems in 1997. Marc is a recognized professional in the colored gemstone field since 1984, specializing in fine quality gems from Africa and the world. Marc graduated with a Bachelors degree in geology and geography, with an emphasis in mineralogy and satellite mapping. Marc made his first trip to Africa in 1984, first to what was then Zaire, now known as the Congo, and finally to Zambia.
Marc had the good fortune to be hired by a Zambian gemstone firm as a geologist to prospect for emeralds . He took up full time residence in Zambia in 1984. After learning the ropes of emerald mining business in Africa, Marc acquired the mining rights to a very famous aquamarine mine called “Kapilinkesa” (in the local vernacular: “a place I will never forget”). Marc worked this famous mine for four years, and it produced some of the world’s finest aquamarine.
During this time, Marc also traveled extensively throughout Africa in search of quality gem materials. His travels took him to Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe establishing extensive gemstone contacts.
Marc left his home in Zambia in late 1989 and now resides in the San Francisco Bay Area, with his wife Lily Kanter, sons Maxwell, Ezekiel and Nathaniel. Although his travels to Africa have slowed down from 5-8 trips per year, he continues to travel to Africa and other parts of the world, in search of quality gemstone cut and rough materials.
