On January 31, 2018, the South-African chartered accountant Philisiwé Sibiya, will officially leave her position as the general manager of MTN Cameroon. She was the first woman to ever manage the leading telecom operator.
Philisiwé Sibiya’s career at MTN International thus comes to its end as she is also leaving the firm.
Throughout her office in Cameroon (3 years), major investments were made in the country to deploy 4G and extend 3G. Also, the firm started sponsoring once again the national football championship, and more importantly, it remained the number one operator despite its rivals having won over some market shares.
Let’s however note that the quality of service provided by the firm she is now leaving is quite questionable (same for other operators, ed.note), according to an audit recently ordered by the government.
Moreover, her substitute will have to carry on talks regarding the reduction or cancellation of the CFA3.5 billion fine that Cameroon’s telecommunication regulator has imposed MTN Cameroon (and to the other operators, by the way, ed. Note), for non-compliance with the regulation on subscribers’ identification.
